Russian ambassador: West will be tougher towards Russia, its closest allies

The West will act in a tougher way towards Russia and its closest allies, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Dmitry Mezentsev told the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

The Russian diplomat recalled that in the past NATO member states assured the USSR that their alliance would not expand to the East. However, today NATO troops and tanks are at the Belarusian border and the Union State is in their cross-hairs, Dmitry Mezentsev said.
“The West will become increasingly tougher towards Russia and its closest allies, because its geopolitical interests overshadowed all commitments (unfortunately, non-written) not to expand NATO to the East, to maintain peace and openness. The 1975 Helsinki Final Act signed by 35 nations of Europe and countries of the American continent was virtually made null and void,” the ambassador said.
In his opinion, today the world is witnessing not “a dialogue of people of reputation and decency who defend their interests in the correct and careful way, but the marginalization of a dialogue, disregard not just for promises made but also for the norms of international law”. “A disregard of such a magnitude is a great threat to the security of our country and our closest allies,” the diplomat said.
