Lavrov: Economic sanctions can be authorized only by UN

12:33, 10 November

Economic sanctions can be applied in exceptional cases and only by decision of the UN, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting of the Russian-Belarusian ministerial collegium in Moscow on 10 November, BelTA has learned.

“As for economic sanctions, in our opinion, they can only be used as a last resort, solely by decision of the UN Security Council in order to counter threats to international peace and security. In this regard, it is unacceptable when unilateral coercive measures that run afoul of international law are used to put pressure on governments that are unwanted by the West,” Sergey Lavrov emphasized.
