Sasnovich, Ivashka off to good start at Indian Wells

Belarusian tennis players went off to a good start at the Indian Wells, BelTA has learned.

Belarus' world number 44 Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated Estonia's world number 51 Kaia Kanepi, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Sasnovich will next face Latvia's world number 25 Jelena Ostapenko. World number 2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will start her Indian Wells campaign against Russia's world number 427 Evgeniya Rodina. Belarus' world number 14 Victoria Azarenka will play either Kazakhstan's world number 42 Yulia Putintseva or world number 76 Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.

Belarus' world number 85 Ilya Ivashka saw off Russia's world number 113 Roman Safiullin, 6-4, 6-2. Ivashka will next play world number 33 Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands. They met on court two times this season and the Belarusian suffered losses in both the encounters.

The tournament in Indian Wells will be over on 19 March.
