The Belarusian People’s Congress will be a genuine national front of the country. Belarus President, Chairman of the Belarusian People’s Congress Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement as he summed up results of the first session of the 7th Belarusian People’s Congress on 25 April, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “Our popular assembly, the Belarusian People’s Congress does not substitute government agencies and does not interfere with their operation. The Belarusian People’s Congress is certainly a political institution. It is the platform where everyone is represented. From ordinary, common rural dwellers, workers operating machine tools to the head of state. It is a venue where we should discuss the key strategic matters of development and guide our society what way it should follow and how it should develop. We cannot allow the Belarusian People’s Congress to become a bureaucratic machine. The congress has to deal purely with global matters, with the strategy: how we will live in the future, how we will develop, on what values we will raise kids and build relations inside our society.”

Routine matters such as the construction of homes, repair of roads, roofs, fences, and so on will be left within the purview of the entire power vertical, the president pointed out.

“And we will not turn a blind eye to it. Including you, the delegates. But in big and small matters all of us should be guided by national interests. We have to handle tasks as statesmen. We should not tolerate opportunistic approaches. We will be a genuine national front. In spite of everything we should be above personal ambitions and current circumstances. Our task is to protect the sovereignty and independence of our Motherland. We should preserve the country, ensure its happy future. There is no one else who can do it. Because time has chosen us!” the Belarusian leader concluded.
