BRICS Games 2024: Day One

The international multi-sport BRICS Games is kicking off in Russia’s Kazan, BelTA has learned.

The first competition day will feature 23 medal events in five sports: sambo, synchronized swimming, artistic gymnastics, weightlifting and wushu. Vasilina Khandoshka, who placed fourth in the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, is one of the hopefuls for medals in the synchronized swimming technical program.

Anastasiya Dabravolskaya and Aliaksandra Mironchyk will compete for medals in the artistic swimming duet technical. The Belarusian team of Hanna Koutsun, Marharyta Kiryliuk, Kseniya Kuliashova, Yana Kudzina, Anastasiya Dabravolskaya, Yana Tratseuskaya, Kseniya Lebedzeva, and Valeryia Valasach will take part in the acrobatic swimming event.

Sambo will feature competitions in four men’s weight categories and three women’s. Competing today will be world champion Aliaksandr Koksha (79kg), Anfisa Kapayeva (50kg), Alena Kupava (54kg), Tatsiana Matsko (59kg), European champion Uladzislau Burdz (58kg), Ihar Mirayeuski (64kg), and Uladzislau Mardusevich (71kg).

Artistic gymnastics will feature all-round event and a number of finals. The Belarusian team will consist of 2024 World Cup winner Yahor Sharamkou, Yaraslau Krutau, Kira Maharevich and World Cup two-time medalist Alena Tsitavets.

The weightlifting program will feature two men’s and two women’s weight events. Competing for medals  will be Alina Schepanova and silver medalist of the 2024 European Weightlifting Championships Yuliya Gulina (both – 59kg), Yahor Papou and Vadzim Likharad (both – 73kg).  

On 13 June the preliminary events will also be held in five sports. Competing in wushu will be Siarhei Vaitko (56kg), Illia Salagubau (60kg) and Daniil Prakharenka (65kg). The badminton group stage will feature Mikhail Makarau, Hleb Shvydkou, Maryna Yanbayeva and Sofiya Yankouskaya. Belarusian teams will also compete in tennis and table tennis tournaments.

The rowing event will feature Ivan Brynza, Mikalai Sharlap, Mikita Karneyeu, Siarhei Valadzko, Dzmitry Furman, Dzianis Klimiato, Anton Kupalau, Viktoryia Vasilyeva, Alena Furman, Veranika Anatsko, Palina Zalatarova.
