Putin congratulated Orthodox Christians celebrating Christmas Eve

09:00, 7 January

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a congratulatory message to Orthodox Christians celebrating Christmas.

The message reads, in particular:

‘This bright, long-awaited holiday is dear to millions of people all over the world. It gives believers joy and hope, inspires good thoughts, deeds and actions. During Christmas we feel with all our hearts how important for us are fatherly, family traditions passed down from generation to generation.

I note that the Russian Orthodox Church and other Christian denominations of Russia play a huge creative role in uniting the people, in preserving our historical memory, unique cultural and spiritual heritage. The contribution of religious organisations to strengthening the institution of the family, the education of young people, the affirmation in society of such enduring moral ideals and values as caring for one's neighbour, mercy and compassion, support for those in need of help and attention is significant. This multifaceted, demanded work is worthy of the deepest recognition.

I wish the Orthodox Christians and all citizens of Russia who are celebrating the Nativity of Christ good health and prosperity.
