Over 20 People Received Injuries from Pyrotechnics on New Year's Eve

During New Year holidays, more than twenty people received injuries from pyrotechnic products. The highest number of injuries was recorded in Gomel region, where seven cases were registered, said Deputy Head of the Directorate General, Head of the Law Enforcement Department of the Main Directorate for Law Enforcement and Prophylaxis of Public Security Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus Dmitry Kuryan at a press conference.

“Major entertainment venues were guarded, access control was arranged. It should be noted that New Year’s Eve was calm. No incidents or crimes were recorded at mass-celebration venues. There were reports about injuries caused by pyrotechnic products, but I would like to point out that citizens received these injuries at their places of residence. In total, from December 31st to January 1st, the Ministry of Internal Affairs received information about 21 physical injuries caused by pyrotechnics,” said Dmitry Kuryan.
There were also two cases when window frames and citizens’ personal property were damaged by pyrotechnics. Dmitry Kuryan said that on New Year’s Eve the staff of the Ministry of Internal Affairs provided beefed-up security. In order to ensure public order, the required number of employees were working at mass-celebration venues. There were over 1.7 thousand venues for mass celebrations; more than 306 thousand citizens visited them.
Oleg Panchuk, Head of the Department for Organizing Emergency Medical Defense of the Health Ministry of Belarus, added that from December 25th to January 2nd 46 citizens who received injures from pyrotechnics turned to medical facilities for treatment. Twenty-two people were hospitalized, including 4 children.
“There were no extremely serious injuries. Mostly Belarusians turned to medical centers with burns around their eyes, corneal damage, hand and lip injuries. All of them received timely medical care,” Oleg Panchuk commented.
Head of the Emergency Rescue Service and Emergency Response Department of Belarusian Emergency Ministry Sergei Novik noted that New Year’s Eve passed in a calm mode, there were no fires.
