A hundred and seventy-six drunk drivers were detected in Belarus in the early days of the new year. Four people died on the roads over January 1st -2nd, whereas another 9 received various injuries, said Stanislav Solovey, senior inspector for special assignments of the State Automobile Inspection Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, reports the correspondent of the Union State portal.

“On average, about forty people are caught drink-driving on a weekday, but on holidays this number rises. Let me remind you that on January 1st, 2019 ninety drivers were caught drink-driving. However, on January 1st, 2020 a hundred and seven drunk drivers were detected, which is quite a large number. On January 2nd, sixty-nine drunk drivers were detected,” said Stanislav Solovey.

We would remind you that from December 27th to January 7th, the national proactive campaign “Sobriety is the rule of the road!” is being held in Belarus. As part of the campaign, traffic police draw citizens’ attention to the importance and need to report on the facts of drink-driving. Moreover, it is necessary to inform road police (using contact number 102) about the presence of drunk pedestrians and cyclists on the roadway or near it, as well as about those who are not indicated by retro-reflective elements, as they all can pose a threat to road safety.
