CEC of Belarus Reminds about Election Campaign Rules and Regulations

Presidential elections in the country have been scheduled for August 9th, 2020.

This week initiative groups of contenders are filing applications for registration. From May 21st to June 19th they will be gathering signatures supporting the candidacy. It is necessary to collect 100,000 voter signatures in order to register a candidate.

According to Ivan Tolkach, Deputy Head of the CEC of the Republic of Belarus, territorial election commissions should be formed by May 20th. Then, electoral districts are to be determined while precinct commissions should be formed by June 24th.

“In order to nominate their representative to the territorial commission, citizens need to submit an application with at least 10 signatures in support of this applicant’s nomination. Workers' association need to collect at least 10 signatures of workers, whereas political parties should hold a meeting of their governing bodies,” said the representative of the Central Commission of the Republic of Belarus on Elections and Holding Republican Referenda.

It is possible to submit candidate’s registration documents to the CEC the very next day and until July 4th.

Registration of candidates for the office of the President of the Republic of Belarus is to be carried out from July 5th to 14th. Next is the campaign period. After that, Belarusian will have an opportunity to early vote from August 4th to 8th. The Election Day is August 9th.

The results of the election campaign are to be announced by the Central Commission of the Republic of Belarus on Elections and Holding Republican Referenda no later than August 19th, 2020.
